How to Deep Clean Your Home Before a White Mountains Winter

October 29, 2026

Winter in the White Mountains means closed windows, muddy boots, and months spent mostly indoors. A deep clean before the cold settles in makes the whole season more comfortable, and it is much easier to do while you can still open the windows to air the house out.

The mudroom and entryway

This is where winter dirt starts. Shake out or wash entry mats, wipe down boot trays, and clear out the coats and gear nobody wore last year. Put a sturdy mat outside and another inside the door, and keep a small basket for hats and gloves so they do not end up on the floor.

Dust where the heat will stir it up

Once the heat runs daily, dust moves everywhere. Dust ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, and the tops of door frames and cabinets. Vacuum heating vents and baseboards, and replace the furnace filter if it is due. Wipe down windowsills and the tracks of sliding doors, where dust and dead insects collect all summer.

Kitchen and bathrooms, top to bottom

In the kitchen, wipe inside the cabinets you use most, clean the oven and the range hood filter, and pull the refrigerator out to vacuum the coils and the floor behind it. In the bathrooms, scrub grout, descale the showerhead by soaking it in white vinegar, and wash or replace the shower curtain liner.

Bedrooms, closets, and the spots everyone forgets

Wash mattress protectors and pillow protectors, and vacuum the mattress itself. Turn over the closets: donate what was not worn this year, and make space for heavy winter clothes. Finally, wipe light switches, remotes, and door handles, and launder curtains or dust blinds before the windows stay shut for months.
